Calm Before The Storm

April 16, 2010

by Al Doyle

What if war was declared on both sides of a heated conflict, but nothing happened?

Such a scenario might seem to be taking place in America today. There will never be a mutually satisfactory truce between effete gun-grabbing elitists and those who believe in the original intent of the Second Amendment and the God-given right to keep and bear arms. Despite the deep mutual dislike between both sides and the barely contained obsession with banning and registering any kind of firearm on the part of the anti-gun crowd, the battle seems to be moving in slow motion. Or is it?

History buffs might look to late 1939 and 1940 for a comparable situation. France declared war on Hitler's Germany following the Nazi invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. Normally, such an action leads to immediate and intense hostilities. In this case, French and German forces stared at each other across the border, and fighting was limited to occasional skirmishes.

The "sitzkrieg" lasted for eight months. What seemed to be lethargy on both sides exploded when Hitler simultaneously invaded France, Belgium and the Netherlands in May, 1940. The two smaller nations were conquered in a few days, and France surrendered six weeks later.

The anti-gun crowd might appear to be focused on other issues, but they never take their eye off the goal of civilian disarmament. This isn't to say that gun grabbers work in perfect coordination or harmony, but they can pull together when the stakes are high.

A bill was recently introduced in the Wisconsin legislature by Sen. Spencer Coggs and Rep. Tony Staskunas. The measure calls for a ban on all private firearms sales except exchanges between family members as well as military and law enforcement purchases.

Rather than face public hearings and media scrutiny, Coggs and Stadkunas attempted to sneak the bill through via fast track procedures. It's no secret that gun confiscators don't play fair or honest, and this is another example of the need for eternal vigilance.

As Gun Owners of America and the National Association for Gun Rights have pointed out, various drafts of the recently passed national health care plan included blatantly anti-gun provisions that have nothing to do with medical coverage. Gun haters admit to wanting to bring back the former "assault weapons" ban of the 1900s, but on a permanent basis and with much broader restrictions.

The United Nations lurks in the shadows, attempting to push its anti-gun mania on America through treaties and bureaucratic means. Likewise, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg's flaming gunophobia means he wants to arrogantly impose his imperial vision of disarming America, and Bloomberg is up front about how to do the dirty deed.

Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) has released a 40-point report on how to ban firearms and make life miserable for honest gun owners. He envisions using executive orders and regulations to disarm America.

Even though gun control hasn't been a trendy media topic lately, that could change in an instant with the right (or wrong) combination of circumstances and events. Don't interpret the temporary lack of hot news on this crucial issue as a sign of victory. Count on the gun grabbers coming out in a red-hot rage against the Second Amendment sooner rather than later.
